I don't recall if anyone's said what the HN means (I suspect it is probably something to do with the model of camera body or lens that it sits upon) and the F in your example may well be something like the particular factory it was produced in, or vice versa (but both of these are educated guesses).
However, I do know/remember what the third and fourth digits signify. The 2 in your example means 2012 (2013 would be 3 and so on) and the G means July, in an A=January to L=December sequence. Signifying date of manufacture, as you have already realised, I expect.
